Hola, I’m Nieke, a Dutch singer living among the dunes of the small village of Bakkum.
As a young girl I was already searching for music that moves you — music you feel deep in your bones. Sad music, in other words. I never got further than an A minor chord, until I started looking beyond my own world. That’s where I found flamenco. From the very first moment I heard it, everything around me seemed to fall away. As if something inside me had always wanted to speak, and finally there was a way to say it. That is what I now want to share with others.
Flamenco is a camino, a path you walk, on which you never stop learning. That’s why I divide my time between Bakkum and Andalusia, between dunes and duende.
Flamenco is one of the most expressive and recognisable music styles in the world. It emerged centuries ago in Andalusia, southern Spain, as a meeting of different cultures — the gitanos, the Moors and the Jewish community. Each brought their own rhythms, melodies and emotions. Together they created something entirely new: flamenco.
Flamenco singing — the cante — is at the heart of everything. The flamenco singer gives voice to the deepest human emotions: loss, longing, joy and defiance. Spanish music has many faces, but flamenco may be the rawest and most direct of them all. In 2010, UNESCO recognised flamenco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Flamenco is not a nostalgic relic. It is a living tradition that continues to grow, evolve and draw in new people — from Spain to the Netherlands.
